A Singer's NightOut Karaoke Contest

Grand Finals July 20

1^st Place $1,000 Cash 2^nd Place $600 Cash 3^rd Place $400 Cash

Karaoke Contest Rules

(*See Complete Rules at each venue location)

The contest qualifying rounds start the first week of April and run weekly until the middle of July. The Semi-finals will take place July 12^th through the 19^th.

The semi-finals for each venue will pay 1^st place $150, 2^nd place $100 and 3^rd place $50.

The finals will be held at The A Club in downtown Spokane on Saturday, July 20, 2012. (The exact start time of the finals has yet to be determined but all finalists will be notified in advance.)

Details:

There will be one weekly winner from each venue. All of the weekly winners will compete in the semi-finals at that venue location. Once a person wins one of the qualifying weekly contests, he or she advances to the semi-finals. To have a valid qualifying round contest, there must be at least 4 contestants. Each qualifying round will be limited to 20 participants. Contestants can compete at any of the venues that are participating in the contest, however contestants can only qualify for one semi-final. The weekly winner will be announced that same evening.

Sign ups will be on a first come-first served basis. The sign-up sheet will not be put out until 30 minutes before the normal start time for karaoke that night.

There is a $5 cash only entry fee for each contestant.

This entry fee must be paid each time a contestant enters a weekly contest. Once you win and move onto the semi-finals or finals, contestants no longer have to pay an entry fee.

Singers may bring their own discs, but you must bring an original disc in good condition for the player to read them. We cannot guarantee that your disc will play correctly. Please have a back up disc or song selection prepared to give our karaoke host should the need arise. Also, in the case of a tie, there will be a sing-off and contestants will need a second song ready.

*Some Karaoke hosts are NOT set up to play your disc. Please be prepared for this by checking before you enter the contest as there are NO refunds.

A Rock & Roll Calling

What do you do with that voice in your head? You know the one. It asks what you are doing in this job, and says there has to be more to life. We all have it. How many of us really listen? How many of us take action to quiet the inner voice? Well, back in 2004, one local rocker did.

Spokane bassist Marty McKinney (The Edge & DNA) spent many sleepless nights with those voices telling him that God had plans for him. After months of questioning, and praying, and at the direction of his wife Julie, Marty took the leap of faith and quit his stable day job to follow a calling of which it appeared, God had not fully made him privy to. He just knew that there was something he was supposed to do to serve.

Together Marty and Julie began visiting the needy of our community. In back alleys and under bridges, they met with the outcasts of society, wielding sandwiches and prayers with their ears and hearts open, in an attempt to find their link in the Spokane poverty problem. Soon they had a following. More and more sandwiches passed through their hands as the homeless community shared word of this crazy couple that had ideas of hope and self-empowerment. Soon it became obvious to the McKinneys what must be done, and in those dark corners of our city, they found their mission.

Truth Ministries homeless shelter began first as a tent city, and has since weathered many storms. Without any government assistance, they have persisted through failed heating and fire systems, a change of location, and economic downturns that have stripped them of their very means of survival, the monthly donors. Somehow through the grace of God and sporadic donations from members of the community, they have managed to continue housing and feeding fifty men who would otherwise be on the streets. They also provide the free stuff. The love and guidance many need to make a positive life change is the foundation of Truth Ministriesâ�� success stories, of which there are many.

Most of us, when faced with the real world problem of homelessness would consider ourselves grown out of our youthful dreams of rock stardom. The musician Marty has never retired. Instead he has integrated his hard rock roots with a driving desire to inspire change in our world. His band Haven has scheduled their January 20^th CD release concert to benefit the shelter, and the community. The McKinneys believe the message in the CD will cross age and class barriers, attracting those who seek faith, as well as those who can replenish it. This is not your Grandmotherâ��s hymnals! It is loud and in-your-face worship rock, with a mirror to the soul affixed firmly in place.

Haven CD Release Concert & Shelter Benefit is an all-ages show and also features fellow Christian rockers Beyond Moral, Burnt Offerings and Thirsty Perfect, as well as surprise intermission music provided by longtime friends from Martyâ��s musician roots. It all happens Friday January 20^th at the Bing Crosby Theater, 7pm. Tickets are $15.00, 12 years and younger are free, and group rates for four or more tickets are available. Marty McKinney began writng & recording the album late 2010, when asked to play some lead guitar on the album long time friend Dave Fiorini offered to help produce the album, together they phoned Jimmy Minton- long time drummer for their former band "The Edge" and the next week he flew in from Arizona and recorded the drum tracks in 2 days (never hearing them before) then Dave called Dan Wexler- friend & former band mate (Thieves in the Temple) (Icon) and flew him into Spokane to play some lead guitar and add flavor, a year later the album is finally mixed down and currently in Duplication.

I started using clay in school because of the sculptural possibilities it offers. Clay can be formed into any shape with a great variety of texture and color. Back then I used only hand building methods to make my work. I now use the potter's wheel to make parts of sculptures as well as functional pots.

In the last few years I've become interested in wood-firing, a process with many variables that influence the surface of the clay. Most pieces are not glazed before firing , I leave it to the fire to put its mark on the pots. It is always interesting to open the kiln and 'read' what happened to the pots in that intense atmosphere of flame and ash.

Setzer first became known as the front man of the rockabilly band, the Stray Cats in the early 80s. Setzer returned to the studio in the 1990s with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, a 17-piece ensemble project that released several albums and earned Grammy nominations and awards for Setzer.

Earlier this year, the premiere night of The Brian Setzer Rockabilly Riot! Europe Tour 2011 played to crowds of over 50,000 people.

Wine often mystifies and is seldom the same. Vintage variation, winemaker whimsy, and laborious labels can make choosing something you LOVE like dropping a quarter in the state of Texas and sending you out blindfolded to find it. If I had a dollar for every time I was asked, “What is your favorite wine?” I would actually be writing this post from the beaches of Aruba or some exotic place. To help answer the question, I’ve identified the 5 best wines you will ever have. I’m sure you’ll agree!

Your First Wine

While you may not have understood all the intricacies of the taste or it might have been a wine of substandard quality, your first wine will always hold a special place in your heart…and palate. Your first time will always be remembered because it started your life long affair with the fermented grape. Even though you fumbled your way through the swirl, sniff, sip and the experience was over far too quickly, it created a spark that now burns as a raging unquenchable desire.

My first wine (or at least the one I remember) was a 2002 Meridian Merlot purchased just before a first date. Interestingly enough it is this wine that birthed this blog, Nectar Tasting Room, Spokane Wine Magazine, and for that matter just about everything I’m doing right now. The wine…unassuming and unmemorable, but the results have been life changing.

The Celebratory Wine

A wedding, the birth of a child, a job promotion, days when the sun comes up; each of these is deserving of a celebration. Many of these celebrations involve wine. Celebratory wine is some of the best wine you’ll ever have. Your brain creates a powerful positive trigger connecting the wine with the emotions from the event. An average wine can taste good and a great wine can become life changing.

Many of us choose sparkling wine for these celebrations. Two sparkling wines that hold special memory for me are from Spokane’s Mountain Dome (Cuvee Forte), and the Northwest Cellars 2001 Brut that I recently opened during the release party of Spokane Wine Magazine.

The Vacation Wine

Oh, the vacation wine, often known as the wine tasting trip wine – for some reason this wine always tastes 2-3 times better in the tasting room than when you get home and taste it. I would offer that it is the sights, sounds, smells, and overall experience that make the wine enjoyable. While the wine may be really good when you get home, the memory of the time at the winery (or even at the dinner table that night), makes the wine taste better. Some of my favorite wines are from wine trips to Yakima, Woodinville, Walla Walla, and Lake Chelan. BEWARE: There will be times you spend your good money on a wine as you are immersed in the experience that will result in disappointment when popping the cork to enjoy with your frozen dinner.

The Wine in Your Glass

I often answer the question, “What is your favorite wine,” with the answer, “the one in my glass.” While this is a humorous response, it actually holds quite a bit of truth to it. The reason…variety. No two wines are the same. Wine is an artistic and creative product and enjoying it provides a unique experience. Rarely do I buy the same wine twice. While there are many wines that I fall in love with (and I’ll go to these for events, gifts, dinners, dates, etc), I love discovering something new. As a wine writer, I am blessed to get samples from wineries all over the world. I love experiencing Assyrtiko from Greece or Gruner Veltliner from Austria or a bold Napa Cabernet from an artisan producer. I encourage everyone to do this. Find your favorites but enjoy the wine that is in your glass. That wine has its own unique characteristics and qualities, discover them.

The Wine Enjoyed with Friends

The best wine, in my opinion, is the wine enjoyed with friends. Long before there was a ‘brick and mortar’ Nectar Tasting Room, I envisioned groups of people sharing a bottle of wine, laughing and creating memories. My tag line for all my video blogs has always been, “Enjoy life with friends…drink happy.” This actually graces our windows at Nectar. Wine is a social beverage, and a social lubricant, and is tied to so many amazing memories with people you love and enjoy.

While writers and pundits, and even this blog from time to time, rate and score the quality of a wine, the ultimate test and character of a wine is…do you like it? Enjoy the art. Celebrate the variety. Enjoy life with friends, drink happy!

Spokane's Holiday Wine Festival

2011 marks Spokane's 26th annual Holiday Wine Fest. One of four major events sponsored by the Spokane Winery Association, Holiday Wine Fest takes place the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. During the three-day event, a record 25 official wineries in Spokane will open their doors to the public (with Nectar Tasting Room housing five wineries and a satellite tasting room for Cougar Crest Estate Winery opening earlier in the year). What better way to shake off the cold and kick-start the holiday season than by sampling the wide variety of world-class wines that Spokane has to offer (and perhaps take care of a little holiday shopping, as well)? Here, a few wineries whet your appetite...

Mike Conway, Owner/Winemaker at Latah Creek Winery, says that the spirit of Holiday Wine Fest really hasn't changed, as it has always centered around gift-giving and exciting new food-and-wine pairings. Now President of the Spokane Winery Association, Mike Conway incorporated Latah Creek in 1982 (the same year as another mainstay, Arbor Crest Wine Cellars), and was part of the original HWF event in 1986. Each year, his wife, Ellena, creates a special 4-5-course meal, a different course to be featured at each pouring station. Latah Creek also boasts one of Spokane's best winery gift shops, which Ellena will stock with brand new holiday items.

One of the main attractions to HWF is that winemakers are typically on-site to pour wine and answer questions. Steve Trabun, Owner/Winemaker of Barili Cellars, says "It's important that people really understand (the winemaking process). We like to educate and we like to do it with a real personal touch." It's that personal touch that Barili, one of a few micro-boutique wineries in Spokane, feels fortunate to be able to provide year-round. Since joining the Spokane Winery Association in January of 2010, Steve and fellow Owners/Winemakers Dana Trabun and Russ and Marlene Feist, have been able to grow the operation from just over 150 cases per year to 400 cases. They believe that part of their success is their low price point of $15-$22/bottle, which customers can most certainly take advantage of during HWF weekend. Barili invites you to join in the season's camaraderie and fun.

Perhaps a great thrill to the 1,000-plus crowd expected on HWF weekend is the prospect of discovering a hidden gem. Tucked away in the depths of the Freeman Center on 2nd and Lincoln, a spot almost as elusive as Barrister Winery's Railroad Avenue, is just such a gem: Grande Ronde Cellars (though not to fear, as HWF tour maps will be available at all participating locations!). Owner/Winemaker, Dave Westfall, owned a wine import business for 17 years prior to starting Grande Ronde in 1997, and in 2009 published a book he co-wrote with Sam Lange called Journey to... Eastern Washington Wine Country. His industry experience and connections to winemakers and vineyard owners near and far perhaps make him one of the most knowledgeable winemakers in the state. Grande Ronde's Red wines consistently score 90 points or higher in Wine Spectator.

Wow! Is there a LOT to do! Summer is in full swing. Hope everyone is making time to get a slice of watermelon, grill something wonderful and lay in the shade on a hot summer day sipping something cold.

This weekend has plenty in store in our regional community;

First Friday is tonight in downtown Spokane. Art, Food, Music and great people. First Night Spokane's "Rising Stars" is back with the amazing "Bubbillusionist", Jarom Watts. Jarom is a multiple Guinness World Record Holder and has dazzled audiences of all ages with his amazing bubble magic. See soap bubbles turned into a twisted tornado along with other mesmerizing feats! River Park Square Atrium 7-9pm. That is just one example of the family friendly fun to bbe had!

The next First Friday is in September and could have cool brisk weather, so go enjoy it tonight....savoring summer.

This weekend is also Taste of the Coeur d' Alene's, the Downtown Street Fair and Art On The Green in Coeur d' Alene. You can stroll all over the NIC campus for Art On The Green, cruise over to the City Park for Taste Of The Coeur d' Alene's and then end up downtown on Sherman Avenue for the Street Fair. All along the way you will find art, music and food...with the beautiful lake as the backdrop. And for those who think that is too much walking, there is a free shuttle bus service making the rounds all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday to cart you back and forth. Gorgeous weather for a fun community party. Don't forget your sunscreen!

Vintage Spokane Brings Fabulous Food, Wine To Lilac City

Over 50 wineries, a dozen local restaurants expected to fill Spokane's Lincoln Center for a night of food, wine and fun to benefit local charity

SPOKANE The Northwest's leading wineries and Spokane's top restaurants are lining up to be a part of the inaugural Vintage Spokane, the area's newest wine and food event, coming to the Lincoln Center on June 5. Complete winery and restaurant listings, event descriptions and tickets are available online at vintagespokane.com.

Vintage Spokane: A Food and Wine Affair, will highlight the award-winning and up-and-coming restaurants and wineries throughout the Northwest, each offering samples of their incredible fare. For no more than the cost of their ticket, attendees will have the chance to sip wines from over 50 of the regions most celebrated wineries, and sample delicious culinary options from more than a dozen top local restaurants.

A portion of the events proceeds will go to benefit the Hospice of Spokane.

Event producers Varsity Communications, who also produce the Washington State Wine Commissions annual Taste Washington event in Seattle, are bringing that same high-end wine-and-dining experience to Spokane. In addition to the Seattle event, Varsity also co-produces Taste Washington: Portland, and were the co-producers of the popular Taste Washington: Spokane event formerly held at the Davenport Hotel each year.

Musicfest Northwest provides young music and dance students the opportunity to perform and have their talent adjudicated by top professional artists from across the U.S. It is the largest festival of its kind on the West Coast (approx. 1400 entries this year). Students from elementary to post- graduate level participate in ballet, brass, flute, guitar, organ, piano, reed, and string and voice divisions.

The Young Artist Section is for more advanced musicians who compete within their division on Sunday or Monday.

Friday’s Festival Highlights Concert presents special performances from this year’s festival week. The “Adjudicator’s Choice” winners from each division including Ballet will be showcased.

The aim of Musicfest Northwest, a non-profit volunteer organization, is to develop in young people an enjoyment and appreciation of all arts, to encourage the study of music and the arts and to promote high standards of performance.

The public is welcome to attend all Festival Events (especially our evening concerts!).

Spokane's local wineries gear up for their annual Spring Barrel Tasting - a weekend of wine, food and fun. All 17 Spokane wineries will be opening their doors to visitors and guests on Mother's Day Weekend. Spring finds wineries everywhere gathering together to share their newly made wines with friends and colleagues. This is a time of celebration that typically marks the end of the winemaking season and the start of a new wine year. Spokane's local wineries invite their friends from near and far to join them in the festivities of their annual Spring Barrel Tasting. Activities at each winery include: Sampling new wines; sampling current vintages; sampling wines still in the winemaking process directly from barrels or tanks; talking with knowledgeable and friendly wine lovers at each winery. Tasting fees may apply.

I remember wanting one of those "invisible dogs on a leash". I was 14. My parents got me one too. Wish I still had it...it was fun!

My husband was one of the guest dancers-he won World Championships 2 years later in London. I didn't know him then...wonder if I watched him dance? He was with a troupe of dancers here to perform for several days.
